I just arrived in Kingston, Ontario a few days ago to do my MA at Queen's. It's great to be back! Kingston is a great city with lots of great bookstores, fantastic coffee shops, and a beautiful cityscape! What else could you possibly ask for? I'm doing my MA on the Conquest of Peru. I adore Spanish history (all history in fact) and am delighted to have an opportunity to pursue my interest. While I gear up for school I'm also in the midst of working on a Hispanic Steampunk story. Anybody reading this is probably thinking: "But, isn't Steampunk supposed to be based on the Victorian era?". Generally it is, but why does it have to be? Why couldn't steam technology have originated in the Spanish Empire? The Spanish were innovative enough to establish and maintain the world's first global empire. It's conceivable that they could have harnessed steam technology as well, although they would have followed a different path than the British. It's cool to speculate, which is one of the joys of "Speculative" Fiction. SF is a medium that allows us to explore all the possibilities of our past, present and future as well as open a door to our own minds and all our loves, hates, fears, etc.. With that in mind, I have many more SF ideas that I plan on posting in the future. Hopefully it won't be too long to the next post, but who knows with my schedule! Hasta luego!
This is my new blog! It's still under construction and I'm not sure how often I'll be able to post but I'm sure that this will be a fun project.
